Welcome to Bass-ically Speaking!
Thanks for stopping by.
First off, thank you to Margaret for the gorgeous header and graphics! Don't you love it? She was so easy to work with and did an amazing job of reading my mind knowing exactly what I was after.
I added recent music-related posts from She Lives to this site. So that gives us a but of repertoire with which to start.
And what's a song without an intro? Here goes!
(Uh one & uh two & uh...)
There really aren't many musician blogs that I've found. There are tons of music blogs though, aren't there? People talking about their favorite bands and the new releases. Free downloads and whatnot.
This blog isn't a music blog as much as it's a musician blog. I see the difference, do you?
I'm a musician. Probably best to describe me as an amateur musician. Even though I do get paid to play, it's certainly not enough to support myself. So I don't really think of myself as a professional, per se.
I started in music at age five years in piano lessons that I abandoned the first moment I possibly could at age nineteen. My mother sang opera and my dad played the radio (country western only) so it was only natural that I should prefer what we now refer to as "Progressive Rock" which also fits into the "Classic Rock" genre. When I was twelve, my folks bought me my first guitar. A classical guitar. On which I learned to play...what else? Rock! In high school, I hooked up with some musical friends, playing in a couple of (really bad) bands. It was tons of fun!
In college I took a couple of years of classical guitar to meet fine arts requirements and then some. A few more bad bands, but getting better which might have had something to do with the fact that we mostly played frat parties where we sounded just great after a few rounds of quarters.
After college, I kept playing. Mostly garage bands and subbing in here and there with friends' bands. As an RN on evening shift, it was tough to make gigs and rehearsals on a regular basis. I started dating a bass player who taught me to apply my guitar skills to the bass. That's when I fell in love. Uh...With the bass, not the guy. Him I dumped.
After I met Mr. Right (who, like my dad, only plays the radio), I married and found myself following him and his career all over Texas. Moving around a lot doesn't give one a chance to get well-networked with other musicians so, aside from an occasional jam session here and there, I pretty much set music aside. When the babies came, even more so.
Once my kids were old enough to fix their own sandwiches, I slowly re-entered the world of garage bands. I started seriously studying bass with a teacher who, several years and several bands later, continues to mentor me. I currently play in a classic rock cover band, Elixir, and an all-girl Christian rock band, Church Chix. I manage both of those bands as well as my daughter's girl-rock band. (If you have MySpace, please friend us! My own MySpace is here.)
And I blog about it all.
My intention for Bass-ically Speaking is to provide some small encouragement and inspiration for musicians. All sorts of musicians. Amateurs, novices, kids, parents of young musicians, musicians who put down their instruments for a time, pros, wannabes...Anyone that has any interest in musicianship is my target reader.
In doing that, I hope to offer tips, insights, interviews, links, lessons, and some music-related fun along the way. And I hope you find something of value here from time to time.
So, Bass-ically Speaking, that's me.
And you? What's your musical background and/or interest? Do you play an instrument or are just interested in learning? Are you the parent of a young musician? Are you a seasoned pro from which I can learn?
Leave me a comment or link to a post that will answer this for me. I really am interested in knowing my readers and about your interest in my blog. Hey! If you're just here to drop a card, I'd like to know that, too. And I thank you for it!
P.S. I'm developing a Musician blog roll for this site. If you blog about musicianship, even if it's only occasionally, please let me know. I will also keep a Music blogroll in the sidebar, so tell me if yours is a music-related site and I'll add it in.
Blog on!
